Grasshopper Weathervane is installed.

November 1, 1742

Artist: Shem Drowne. It is located atop the steeple of Faneuil Hall. Some sources say that the figure is chosen either because it appears on the Faneuil family crest; others that is in imitation of British banks, which used it to commemorate a story about a grasshopper leading to the discovery of an abandoned baby who grew up to be a prominent businessman and erected such a weathervane atop the Royal Exchange in London. The mechanism is knocked down by an earthquake in 1755, and damaged by fire in 1761. It is moved from the center of the building to the east end in 1852, used as a time capsule in 1852, damaged in a ceremony in 1899, and stolen but recovered in 1974.
